Dragon's Wrath: The Cursed Returnee

Chapter 37 Surrounded.

Thanks to Lili's support, Ethan could freely use his stamina, and spam Bash left and right. Although his sore muscles were a pain, little by little, the pain was decreasing thanks to his leveling up speed, and it was because his body was getting stronger. In any case, to make things as efficient as possible, Ethan allocated all his points to strength and speed.

"I guess this isn't half-bad," Ethan muttered to himself. "The only real problem is my sword's condition. After cutting too many monsters made of fire, it is getting damaged. I don't have any other choice but protect it with Neutral Enchantment."

Things would be more efficient if Lili focused solely on recovery of his stamina, but that was no longer possible, and Ethan's claymore was just one of the reasons why. The more he approached the center of the town, the more guards on fire Ethan found. Some of them were already dead, but some weren't. So, Ethan had to extinguish the flames with his Water Ball. Being hit by it was quite painful, enough to knock out some of the guards, but it was better than slowly being burned to death.

"Hey, I need mana…" Ethan frowned when his mana became empty, and Lili wasn't doing anything to recover.

Ethan turned around only to see the girl trembling inside the cart. He still couldn't see her expression, but it was clear that she was frightened to death. That only happened a few times in the past, but Ethan also reacted in the same manner on his first missions as a hero.

At the same time, he also found along the way that amidst the chaos and destruction would tremble in fear. Most of them were young kids from nobles' families. Still, Ethan also saw that happening many times when experienced soldiers faced the commanders of the demon king's army. They were an absolute symbol of terror, after all.

"… Sorry to make you do this, but neither you nor I have any other choice," Ethan said after sighing. "Close your eyes and ears if you want, but I need you to recover my energy. Do that, and this chaos will end much faster than you think."

Lili wasn't quite convinced of that, but at least she obeyed what Ethan said. She closed her eyes and covered her ears, and surprisingly enough, even without using her hands, she could make Ethan recover his stamina and energy. To recover health was another matter, but Ethan didn't need it right now, so it was fine.

Ethan resumed his task of hunting fire spiders, but at the same time, he focused more on helping those who needed a hand. Those who passed out after being 'helped' by his Water Balls probably won't need their weapons for a while. So, Ethan decided to use those to speed up his hunting speed even more. Even normal iron swords were quite deadly as throw weapons as long as they were used alongside Bash. Thanks to it, Ethan managed to walk in a straight line and still hit the monsters that were far on the sides.

"Better late than never," Ethan shrugged. "In any case… I wonder why I didn't receive any quests until now. My system reacted to the simulator, and while I was in the other world, I received quests whenever a major event happened, and those quests were related to it. Surely the same thing was supposed to happen here."

Ethan was worried, but he didn't have much time to worry about those things. He and Lili finally arrived at the center of the town, only to find a massive horde of fire spiders decimating the remaining guards of the city. Behind the guards, Ethan saw some civilians having a hard time evacuating.

"Well, now… they should have a lot of time to leave, so why are they still here?" Ethan frowned. "According to this map, there is nothing blocking their path."

The fire was too strong, and adding the smoke and the darkness of that night to all that, Ethan couldn't see that far ahead. In any case, something was blocking their path. So, Ethan's only option was to open an escape route from an unexpected direction.

"Lili, what is the maximum range of your skills?" Ethan asked. "Until what point can I get away from you while you still will be able to restore my energy?"

"Those spells are fairly complicated, so they are only effective while you are under a certain radius," Lili said while after raising her head a little to confirm the situation of the surroundings. "The limit is one hundred meters, but the effectiveness will start to decrease if you get farther away than fifty meters."

That wasn't so bad. Ethan could cover the minimal distance in less than two seconds. It was more than enough for him to open a path and draw the attention of the monsters to him. Lili won't probably like being left alone in the middle of a warzone. However, despite her lack of experience, she still was a member of the military, so she had to endure it. This time Ethan stopped the cart before leaving to attack the monsters. However, since the fire spiders were pretty big and emitted a lot of heat, he poured a lot of water over his body before heading by using Water Balls.

"If something unexpected happens and I don't notice, just scream," Ethan said. "I will be back in a flash."

"… Who will scream?" Lili got up and then prepared herself. "Don't mock me."

That was the first time Lili had seen the results of a massive battle from so up close. Since she was from a noble family, she stayed inside in one of the safest rooms in the fortress while the monsters attacked. Although she could use offensive spells, there was no sense in having them when one couldn't calm down and aim properly. Besides, her job was to offer support. Since she was good at recovering their energy from others, that was the only thing she did in the previous weeks. However, Lili finally realized that it was time to open her eyes and ears. That was the reality, and she had to face it.
