Chapter 130: Candidates from the Whole Nation

Through talking, Gao Peng found out that four out of the five other candidates were from wealthy families. If they weren’t from families with a political background, they were second generation nouveau riche or their parents were powerful monster trainers.

Han Xiao and Gao Peng were the only commoners, and they cherished each other’s presence.

Han Xiao said to Gao Peng with a smile, “A few companies came looking for me right after the exam. Did any of them look for you?”

Gao Peng was stunned, and he started to frown. No one had looked for him yet. What was this...

Han Xiao could tell from Gao Peng’s perplexed expression what he was thinking, so he comforted him with a smile, saying, “It’s fine. You are number one in Chang’an City. After the result comes out, companies will definitely contact you!”

“Yeah, probably,” said Gao Peng, though he secretly thought to himself that his grandfather or Uncle Liu probably kept the companies away from him.

Han Xiao’s familiar was a God Ant. From what Gao Peng had heard, it mutated from a Black Ant to a God Ant after it mistakenly ate something. So the name was in reference to the fact that the mutation was an act of God.

Gao Peng took a look at it. This was a level 21 Commander tier, Excellent grade, familiar.

It was two and a half meters tall and five meters long. It had a glistening outer shell, and it looked very imposing.

But to Gao Peng, this monster’s real name was revealed as Golden Devil Ant. The God Ant name was completely inappropriate.

This was interesting. Was it because the patent had already been registered?

[Monster Name]: Golden Devil Ant

[Monster Level]: Level 21 (Commander)

[Monster Grade]: Excellent

[Monster Attribute]: Gold

[Monster Weakness]: 1. Its joints are not protected by its shell. 2. It hates odors that cause irritations.

It was hard to train a familiar up to the Commander tier just through talent alone. If monster trainers didn’t come from a good background or didn’t have the necessary resources, they wouldn’t be able to acquire the items needed to speed up a familiar’s growth. Even if they got lucky and acquired some by luck, they would still be few and far between. This was the cold, harsh reality.

This was not to say that the average person wouldn’t be able to train up their familiar. They would just need more luck. They would need to trade time for opportunity. Rich people could just buy the necessary technology, but poor people would need to take risks.

Gao Peng’s ability was that he was able to let his familiars get promoted to the next tier without possessing the necessary items. This allowed him to take shortcuts when it came to training his familiars. However, he was not able to increase the speed of his familiars’ growth.

The plane landed.

In front of them was a bustling metropolis, and they could see planes ascending and descending in the huge airport. This was Gao Peng’s first impression of the base city of Jiangnan.

Another name for the base city of Jiangnan was Wu Du. It was quite close to Mo Du and Jinling Du, and it was the top city in the Huaxia Region after the Cataclysm.

“Welcome to the base city of Jiangnan,” said the sweet voice of a woman over the airport speakers as the plane landed.

The ramp at the back of the plane opened, and sunlight shot into the plane.

...

“Hey, that’s a military plane, right? Why are there so many military planes here today?” asked a passenger in the airport lounge as he looked outside in curiosity.

Within the hour that he had waited for his plane, he had seen at least eight military planes land. The dark green planes had blue stripes on them, and their streamlined bodies made them look very high tech.

“Do you think it’s because there is going to be a surge in the number of monsters near Jiangnan?” asked a nearby person anxiously, frowning.

“Probably not. If there was a surge in monsters, the news would have mentioned it,” said another person, comforting him.

“Hopefully...” said the man as he nodded.

“You don’t need to worry. There is no outbreak of war. Those planes are carrying candidates that are taking part in the second round of the Monster Trainer College Entrance Examination in the Huaxia Region,” said another man.

“They actually mobilized such a large number of people for a test? Even using military planes to transport them...” One of the people there became speechless.

“Hey, what do you know? There are only a few candidates in any single base city, usually only a few dozen total. They are the best and brightest out of thousands of candidates. Of course the military region needs to protect these geniuses,” said a young man, rolling his eyes as he spoke.

“Oh... they are only a few out of thousands? Then they really must be the top candidates out of each city. They definitely must be talented,” said the person who asked the first question. “Hey, do you know why they are coming here to the base city of Jiangnan?”

“You should be able to see why on TV in a few days,” said the young man. He cleared his throat, adjusted his collar, and lifted his nose.

A middle-aged woman who had been listening in suddenly interjected, “Do you have someone in your family who is working in the government? Otherwise, how do you know these things?”

The young man’s mouth twitched a little. You finally asked!

He took a deep breath, looking very proud, and opened his mouth-

“Yehan! Why are you here? You almost gave us a heart attack,” yelled a girl with a ponytail as she ran over toward the young man. “Everyone was about to leave, but we discovered that you were gone. If it weren’t for your familiar leading the way, I wouldn’t have been able to find you. Why do you always make people worry? I’m not even your mother!” The girl’s tone became more serious as she spoke. This guy had already wandered off three times!

Behind the girl with the ponytail came a white piglet. It shook its head and gave a very human-like sigh. It was disappointed with its stupid master.

Yehan’s face turned red and he waved his hands around, saying, “I didn’t get lost! I just wanted to see what the monster trainers from the other cities looked like. Moreover, it is not getting lost if a monster trainer goes the wrong way. It doesn’t count.”

This explanation made so little sense that even the white piglet started to laugh. It was ruthless ridicule. The girl with the ponytail couldn’t help but laugh as well.

The airport lounge suddenly had a jolly atmosphere.

Finally, the girl with the ponytail shouted, “Don’t wander off next time!”

...

Are these the other candidates in the exam? Gao Peng looked around to examine the other candidates.

There were a lot of people, close to 200.

Fortunately, he grew up in the Huaxia Region, so he had long gotten used to being in a crowded place.

There were about 50 base cities in the Huaxia Region. Most second-tier cities before the Cataclysm became base cities after the Cataclysm.

There were all types of familiars. Basically every different type of familiar was represented there!

There were flying-types, such as the six-meter tall Volcanic Vulture, which kept emitting heat waves from its body.

Gao Peng thought that Silly would be so scared that he would hide. Who knew that he would just hold on tightly to Gao Peng’s head? He then went to Gao Peng’s back. Through the Blood Contract, Gao Peng could hear Silly saying, “I’m not a fruit juice. I don’t taste good, I don’t taste good...”

Besides flying-types, there were also ghoul-types, which were all either wearing capes or wrapped tightly in clothes. Perhaps they didn’t want to scare anybody.
