Chapter 83 - MOM
It had been a week since Kevin visited Selena Beischel's laboratory. Since then, he had obeyed his mother's orders to stay at home even though with a heavy heart. The genius scientist even had to take time off work because of that.
In the past week, Kris's eyes never left him. As per Selena's order, Kris never left Kevin alone. They slept on the same bed, Kris didn't go outside at night, and until morning, the handsome werewolf was still in a position hugging the scientist tightly.
During this week, Kevin also continued to train with Kris to be able to control his power. Kris taught him how to bring out the power, and also how to use the power on his opponent.
Kris also taught him how to use the shapeshifting technique. After a week of intensive training, Kevin was finally able to master all the techniques taught by Kris.
Today, after they had their breakfasts, the two men then watched TV together. Kris protectively hugged Kevin's waist as if he didn't want to be left by his lover even for a second. Kevin tried to escape the hug, but Kris didn't want to lose until finally, it was Kevin who chose to give in.
The program that was broadcasting on television this morning was breaking news.
["A shocking news was released by the Intelligence Agency this morning. In their official portal, they announced an emergency due to the attack of the evolved werewolves. The Intelligence Agency announced that currently, werewolves' bite can infect humans with a virus that causes them to mutate into werewolves. According to Intelligence Agency, there are currently about 85 werewolves roaming the city. People are expected to remain calm and stay at home until the situation is under control."]
Both Kevin and Kris looked dumbfounded at the news. In the past week, they never got any news from Selena regarding the werewolf attacks that got worse. The last time they communicated with the professor was four days ago when Selena informed them that she and the military had collaborated with the Intelligence Agency to solve the problem. She said that the situation was still under control, so they didn't have to worry.
But, what was it? The current situation was completely out of control. The military and Intelligence Agency were so adept at covering up the secret that for the past week, it seemed as if nothing had happened in the city. But, it looked like they all gave up today when they couldn't control the situation anymore.
"So, that woman lied to me again?" Kevin asked in a very obvious angry tone.
"She also lied to me. She lied to both of us this time. How could they hide the case all this time when there are already that many werewolves roaming around? Aren't there any eyewitnesses who saw the monster and passed it on to the public?" Kris also asked in a frustrated tone.
Kevin smiled sarcastically at his lover's question. "You don't seem to know how the Intelligence Agency works. Even if there were eyewitnesses, they would have silenced them so that the secret wouldn't be exposed to the public," said the black-haired man.
Kris sighed in defeat at his lover's words. His strong hand was no longer hugging Kevin's waist as he used it to gently massage his aching temple.
"Kris, you try to contact the old woman and ask her for an explanation."
Without needing to be ordered twice, Kris immediately grabbed his cellphone on the table and swiftly moved his fingers to contact the professor. He turned on the loudspeaker of his cellphone and waited for the elderly lady to answer the call. Not long after, the call was answered.
"Yes, Kris? What's wrong?"
Damn, the lady's voice still sounded calm.
"It's me," Kevin spoke up first before Kris could open his mouth.
"Oh, what's up, Kev? Do you need anything?"
Kevin rolled his eyes at his biological mother's pleasantries. "How long do you want to hide the fact that the situation is now getting out of hand?" The young man asked in an annoyed tone.
"Ah, so you guys have heard the news," the lady replied. "I'm sorry, Son. We've actually caught dozens of newly mutated werewolves, but it turns out that other werewolves keep popping up. The only thing we could have done before was to shift the issue so that the issue was not heard by the public. Today we decided to unveil everything to the public because the situation is very difficult to control if we carry out the arrest operation in secret."
Kevin growled with anger at what his mother said. Why didn't she take that step from the beginning? If they had taken preventive action more seriously, this wouldn't have happened.
"Then, what are you planning to do now, Professor?" This time, it was Kris who asked a question.
"We will continue our current plan," the professor explained. "We will try to catch them alive and lock them to a safe place so that they won't spread the virus even more."
"It will all be useless if we don't destroy the mastermind behind this," Kevin quickly countered his mother's idea.
He could hear the lady sighing on the other end of the line. "I know, Kev," she said weakly. "But, for the moment, this is all we can do. The military also continues to try to find their base so that they can defeat the werewolves of the previous generation as well as their leader."
"Wait, why not ask Blue about their secret base when they took her not too long ago?" Kris asked again this time.
"We have done that, Kris. Blue told us where the island was, and the military had gone there, but the island was empty."
Kris and Kevin were silent at what the professor said. The two of them thought about where the secret base of the werewolves would be located.
"Or maybe ..." Kris seemed to find a clue. "Their base is on the island my father used to live in?"
Kevin turned to his lover in surprise. "Wasn't the island empty the last time we looked for Blue there?" Asked the young scientist.
Kris's face was a little panicked as he replied, "Maybe they didn't bring Blue to their real base on purpose as a form of anticipation if things went wrong. I wasn't living there, so I don't know much about the island my father used to live in. But, the island has a remote hill, and my father used to go there!"
Kevin was surprised to hear Kris's words. He still remembered what the deserted island looked like, and he also remembered how the island had hilly contours.
"Why don't you ever say that to me, Kris?" This time, it was Selena who threw a question.
"That's because I thought there was nothing special about the place!" Kris's voice sounded frustrated and regretful. "When my father lived there, he often went to the seaside. He even went diving and swimming to cool off. I think he went to that hill for the same purpose."
Kris looked really messed up now. How could he not have detected the oddity for a long time even though he often visited his father on the island? During his visit there, nothing seemed out of place. It seemed his father was trying to hide the secrets about the island from him for a long time.
Kevin noticed Kris's foul mood, and he could only try to calm the man by gently rubbing his shoulder, trying to non-verbally convey that none of this was Kris's fault.
"I want to go to the island to end it all," Kevin suddenly spoke up again.
The expression on his face was very cold. He imagined how chaotic the public would be after they knew that werewolves had returned with different abilities. He was sure it was chaotic out there after the news spread to the public. The humans crowded themselves in their house, and new kinds of werewolf monsters were roaming freely outside. The atmosphere of the city must have been terrifying.
"Kevin," Selena softly called out to her son. "I know you're tired of everything, but for now, you have to hang on here. We all don't know what your father was hiding on the island. If he hurts you, I'll never be able to forgive myself."
Kevin paused to hear his mother speaking. From her tone, it was clear that the senior professor was very tired as well. Selena had endured it all for a long time. She had been experiencing inner conflicts since 1980 when they first created werewolves.
Since then, Selena had been under pressure by staying with Joseph, who wanted to continue the forbidden project. The female professor felt stupid as she had failed to prevent Joseph from committing all these crimes for decades.
"Then, will you send the military there?" The young scientist finally asked again after making some deliberations in his heart.
"No, Son." Unexpectedly Selena did not confirm Kevin's predictions. "I'll go there myself."
Kevin and Kris looked very surprised to hear Selena's answer.
"Professor! You shouldn't be reckless with the decision!" Kris reacted quickly when Kevin was still confined by the sudden declaration.
"Joseph is definitely there, and this is the time for us to settle our business. I have to do what I should have done decades ago."
Selena's words somehow made Kevin's heart thumped very fast. He got a bad feeling after hearing the words of his biological mother.
"So, you want to go there yourself?" The fair-skinned man spoke again after a few minutes he fell quiet.
"Yes, Kev. I should finish what I started, shouldn't I?"
Kevin's tears started dripping from his almond eyes. His chest felt tight at the mother's weak question. His hand roughly wiped the clear liquid on his cheeks as he said, "Promise me that you'll come back safely, Mom."
