Chapter 95 - [FLASHBACK 3] THE FIRST WAR
[2021]
Selena was wrong. It had been four decades that she stayed beside Joseph and complied with all his wishes, but Joseph didn't change at all.
They had married sixteen years ago, and God granted their wish by giving them a little boy nine years ago. They named the boy Kevin. Oh no, that's not quite right. Joseph was the one who gave the name for their baby boy.
Joseph said that Kevin was the anglicized form of the Irish name Caoimhín meaning "handsome birth," derived from the older Cóemgein, composed of the Old Irish elements cóem "kind, gentle, handsome" and gein "birth."
Just like the meaning of the name, Kevin grew up as a kind, gentle, and handsome boy.
Joseph loved Kevin dearly, and he always complied with the little kid's wish. Unfortunately, things once again change, but not in a good way.
It was New Year's eve, and they should have spent the moment with their little family, but Joseph insisted on working in the laboratory with her on New Year's eve.
Kevin begged them to stay at home, but Joseph unexpectedly didn't comply with his only son's wish.
"Why don't you stay with me at home, Dad?" Little Kevin asked his father with his sad face.
Selena, who was standing beside Joseph, could only smile wistfully at her only son.
Joseph sighed before bringing his hand to ruffle his son's black locks. Kevin also had black hair like them. His little face was like a mixture of Joseph and Selena's faces. Even so, many people said that Kevin looked more like his father than his mother.
"I'm sorry, Kev," the father said regretfully. "We have some works in the laboratory, so we have to leave you at home."
Kevin pouted his thin lips at his father's response. "But, it's New Year's eve, Dad!" The nine-year-old boy stubbornly argued.
"I know, my boy," the father replied again. "But, you're a big boy now, right? Didn't you say that you'll be having a baseball match in a few months? If you want to win the match, then you should rest well. It's already late at night, so you better rest."
"But, I want to see the fireworks, Dad!"
Joseph sighed again as he glanced at Selena, who remained quiet all the time. Selena originally didn't agree with Joseph's idea to go to the laboratory on New Year's eve, but Joseph told her that he wanted to discuss some important matters with her, and they couldn't do that at home. That's why Selena finally agreed to follow her husband.
"Mom will buy you some firecrackers tomorrow, Kev. Now you better rest," Selena decided to butt in when she saw her son's stubborn attitude.
Kevin turned to her and pouted at her as well. "Mom is not fun! Both of you don't love me, right?"
Joseph and Selena glimpsed at each other. They knew so well that their son was a very sensitive person.
Joseph decided to hug Kevin's body and kissed the top of the kid's head. "We love you so much, my son. You're the most precious gift for me. Don't say something like that again, alright?"
It felt like Kevin could feel his father's sincere love, and he nodded his head obediently.
Selena smiled at the side. Joseph always knew how to comfort their only son. Even though he was busy with his works in the laboratory, he always spared some time to play with Kevin. She was so thankful that her husband still had a soft spot for their son.
After bidding goodbye to Kevin, they then left their house with Joseph's car.
The car was engulfed by silence after the car left the residence. Selena's mind was complicated. It was hard for her to leave her son alone in the house on New Year's eve. It was the first time they didn't spend New Year's eve together, and her heart was heavy when she realized it.
No one speaking in the car before Selena broke the silence. "What important matters do you want to discuss with me, Jos?" She asked her husband.
"I'll tell you when we arrived at the laboratory, Sel. The matters might surprise you, so let's talk about it in the laboratory."
Joseph's words made Selena even more curious. "Can't you tell me now, Jos? I'm so curious, so please tell me about that matter now."
Joseph lamented. "You and Kevin are the same, Sel. Both of you are so stubborn," he replied.
"You're no different than us, Jos. If not, you're more stubborn than us. Just look at how stubborn you are with all your plans."
Selena didn't mean to offend her husband, but the changes on her husband's face signaled that the man was a bit offended by her words. Joseph must be offended by the word 'plans' she just uttered. Both of them certainly knew that the plans were related to the werewolf.
"The matters that I want to discuss with you related to my plans, Sel."
Selena's hands squeezed the seat belt tightly. If the matters were related to the plans, then it must be very serious and bad. Yeah, it must be so bad.
"My werewolves army will start attacking the world tomorrow."
Selena turned her head swiftly to her husband, who was driving beside her. Joseph had been preparing for the army for years, but he didn't tell her the real purpose of the army. He just told her that the army would help him to reach his purpose in the future.
Selena should have guessed about that, but she was too ignorant all the time. About twenty years ago, she and Joseph had succeeded in controlling the werewolves. The werewolves gained consciousness again after so many experiments they had done, and that was a big success.
"So, you've been planning to initiate the war all this time?" The lady asked her husband.
"Yes," Joseph answered casually. "I've said to you that I want to rule the world, right? I want to put humans under my palm, so no one will reject me again. I want them to respect me highly as their leader!"
Selena was speechless. She had been trying to change Joseph's mindset, but her efforts all these years were fruitless in the end. She tried to endure her guilty feelings just for Joseph, but she got nothing in the end. Joseph was still the same. He didn't want to change at all.
Joseph chose to stay under the devil's claw, and even if she had been trying to be an angel, the devil always won.
"Why are you being like this, Jos?" Selena asked weakly as she ducked her head. "You've been better after Kevin was born, and I thought you already let go of your bitter past. Why do you want to rule the world when we already have a happy family, Jos?"
Selena was fed up with her husband. It turned out she was wrong all the time. It turned out she couldn't change her husband at all.
"I'm happy with you and Kevin, but I still hate the world. I want to show the world that I, an abandoned child in the orphanage, can rule the world and have my palm above them."
Selena could only shake her head tiredly. She couldn't do anything for her husband.
"I'll report you to the government, Jos."
Selena tried to scare her husband. The husband's expression changed a little, but then his lips let out a mocking laugh.
"You want to report me to the government?" He asked in amusement. "If the government wants to find the mastermind, then I'm not the only mastermind here. You're also the mastermind, and they surely will put you into jail with me. If that happens, then Kevin will be alone in this world."
Selena was in doubt now. She imagined how Kevin would be if he was left alone in the world. Both she and Joseph had no relatives, and Kevin surely would be sent to an orphanage if both of them were put into prison.
Kevin was still so young, and she couldn't leave him alone. No! She couldn't let that happen!
"You win, Jos," Selena spoke while gritting her teeth. "I will let you do as you wish now, so don't you dare to blackmail me using Kevin again. He knows nothing, and you better leave him alone."
Joseph showed a lopsided smile on his face. "I won't ever hurt Kevin, Sel. He's my son, and I love him greatly. You don't need to worry about that."
Selena laughed bitterly at her husband's words. "You love him greatly, but you have the heart to let him sleep alone tonight," she sneered at her husband.
"He's not alone. There's a nanny in our house."
"Do you think the nanny is the same as us? No, Jos. Kevin needs us, not a nanny."
Joseph didn't rebuke anymore and just focused on driving the car. It was New Year's eve, and the street was so full of vehicles.
Selena sighed as she drifted her gaze away from her husband. She stared outside the windows and her obsidians were greeted by sparkling fireworks in the black sky. It was officially a new year.
Humans were happily celebrating the new year without knowing that tomorrow would be the beginning of the war.
