Chapter 128: Underestimated Country
Chapter 128: Underestimated Country
The two assassins that watched from a distance along with Bernard and Elizabeth were surprised to see such a powerful, skilled and intelligent leader. He had not only coordinated his troops perfectly, but also took out the berserk assassin without suffering a single casualty.
They all realised that they had massively underestimated what the Gobe Country was capable of and they didn't think that it would have been able to develop so much within a short amount of time.
3 centuries wasn't much time at all, and in that time, the Gobe Country had grown from a few people and their wives, to quite a powerful country that was growing and developing at a steady pace.
However, its growth was restricted and most didn't have the resources or knowledge to surpass the Mortal Cultivation Level, so would leave the country in the pursuit of strength. That knowledge and resources were only owned by a few in the country, including the royal family, and none of them were willing to share those resources and knowledge.
Because of that, most of the talented and powerful young cultivators that were ambitious, but weren't of high status or part of a powerful family or organisation, would leave the country and that left the Gobe Country as one that was mediocre and one that wasn't recognised by the other nations on the continent.
The Gobe country was yet to form any connections with any other countries, but it was also yet to have conflict with any other countries. It hadn't grown much in terms of size and didn't seem to have many cultivators above the Mortal Cultivation Level, so most other countries didn't see them as a threat.
But as the organisations and the royals continued to gather young talents and nurture them, they were slowly providing more and more people that they had recruited the means to surpass the Mortal Cultivation Level in preparation for the inevitable civil war.
After that civil war, the side of the Gobe Country that came out on top would then have to either truce with or battle against other neighbouring countries that might see it as an opportunity to invade a country that had been weakened after a civil war.
Unlike most countries in the world of cultivation, the Gobe Country had a hierarchy, but that hierarchy was based on status, identity and wealth, which wasn't a hierarchy that most people would accept.
What most other countries had within them was that those that were powerful, skilled, talented or special were respected and in higher places, while those that weren't, were of lower status.
They would also have one king or queen that had the strongest lineage and was the most powerful, but if they were publically defeated in a battle, they would have to step down and forfeit their position.
The other important positions such as generals in the army and those that create the laws were filled by others that were either intelligent, powerful or skilled in that particular field.
That way it didn't matter where, how or from who you born from, and gave everybody the chance to climb their way to the peak of the country.
It also solidified the position of the leader of the country and the leader would be respected by all and would be a position that would be desired by all the people in the country.
With that national structure, everyone would contribute to the country while competing for the leadership position. It would also make it so that people were willing to pay taxes and to help the country develop for the their own sake and for the sake of their descendants.
This would make it so that a country is strong and united, and although conflict is inevitable, humans as selfish beings will always do what benefits them. If the country becomes stronger and safer, it will be better for everybody to live in.
Gobe Country had many issues and without leadership or taxes, was completely privatised and separated, which would soon collapse the country.
Wiping the blood off his sword, the guard leader returned it to his sheath and walked over to Elizabeth and Bernard, leaving his men to clean up the area and dispose of the assassin's body.
2 and 3 were long gone, and as soon as they saw their leader die, they rushed in the opposite direction, knowing that if their leader couldn't deal with them, they didn't have a chance.
"At least we kept our lives and we have now become the assassin duo instead of the assassin trio," said 3 who didn't really care much about the loss of their leader.
"Yes, our survival is most important and although 1 seemed the most intelligent and careful out of all of us, he was too uptight and crazy to work with. At least we are alive and can sell the information of Elizabeth being sheltered by the Gobe Country Royal Family back to the guild, along with the information about the Gobe Country's power growing" agreed 2.
Bernard was put into cuffs, while nobody dared to touch Elizabeth. Although she was weak and frail, she was used to being treated well and wouldn't allow herself to be spoken down to.
She had her pride and seemed to have an arrogant attitude, but that was just the way that she was bought up to act and she had to present herself in that way, otherwise with her weak body that was very alluring, she would be exploited by others.
"Give me your names, your family names and what you are doing here?" said the guard leader with a tone that was stern, but not disrespectful.
He was being careful not to offend them in case they were people of high status, but also wanted to make it clear that he was in control of the current situation and that he was their saviour.
"I am Elizabeth Graham and this is my servant" answered Elizabeth who had lost all the previous immaturity and sadness that she displayed when she was with Bernard.
