Chapter 240 Open the Door If You Don't Want to Die
Chapter Two Hundred Forty
The car drove past that house and stopped in front of the gate of another courtyard ahead, checking the house number.
669, this is the place.
Long Xiaoshan got out of the car.
He walked up to the gate.
The house was built in an ancient architectural style and indeed had some years on it. The camphor tree inside had lush branches reaching for the sky, visible even beyond the courtyard wall. There were also two small stone lions at the entrance. Long Xiaoshan patted the red lacquered gate.
After a moment, a crisp voice came from inside: "Coming."
Creak!
The door opened a crack, and a pretty little face, charming yet petulant, appeared. Seeing Long Xiaoshan, her eyes lit up. She hurriedly pulled the door open and said, "Big Brother Xiaoshan."
"Xuehen," greeted Long Xiaoshan with a smile as well.
"Come in quickly, Big Brother Xiaoshan." Bai Xuehen eagerly took Long Xiaoshan's hand and led him into the courtyard.
Long Xiaoshan fixed his eyes on her as they walked. That day, Bai Xuehen wore a white short-sleeve sweater with tight-fitting jeans underneath, revealing her young and upright figure. Long Xiaoshan had always seen her dressed in traditional attire, and this was the first time he had seen her in modern clothes.
Who would have thought she had such a great figure, truly inheriting Bai Susu's impressive traits. Only because of her age, she wasn't quite as fully matured.
But it added a breath of youthful vitality.
Seeing Long Xiaoshan eyeing her incessantly, Bai Xuehen's face blushed as she rebuked, "What are you looking at? Is there a flower on me?"
"I think it's even prettier than a flower," Long Xiaoshan said earnestly.
Bai Xuehen rolled her eyes at Long Xiaoshan and quickly ran into the house, calling out, "Grandpa, Mom, Brother Xiaoshan is here."
Long Xiaoshan walked into the main hall and noticed Bai Heming and his wife were also there, but he ignored them.
He approached Grandpa Bai and asked, "Grandpa Bai, how are you feeling now?"
"I'm feeling very well, young friend, thanks to you," he replied.
"Let me check your pulse again."
"Sure, thank you, young friend." Grandpa Bai gave a hearty laugh and extended his hand.
Long Xiaoshan checked Grandpa Bai's pulse and smiled slightly, "Your physical condition is very good. Continue taking the remaining Ginseng and pay attention to your health maintenance."
Grandpa Bai nodded with a smile: "Since our young friend has come, let's all be seated for the meal."
Under Grandpa Bai's invitation, everyone sat down at a banquet table in the adjoining flower hall.
Apart from Grandpa Bai who abstained for health reasons, everyone else accompanied Long Xiaoshan in drinking some alcohol. However, throughout the meal, Long Xiaoshan never so much as glanced at Bai Heming and his wife, treating them as if they were air even when they offered toasts.
The couple felt uneasy throughout the meal and as soon as the banquet was over, they rose to take their leave.
"Heming, focus on your work when you get back. Be patient and don't be impulsive," advised Grandpa Bai.
"Yes, Father."
Bai Heming and his wife left the Bai family mansion somewhat abashed.
Once outside, they got into their car.
Ma Xiaohong exclaimed angrily: "Bai Heming, is there any father like this? He didn't even try to speak up for us, and Bai Susu didn't either. They're intentionally kicking us while we're down, aren't they still your father and your sister? Strangers are nicer than them."
"Enough!"
Bai Heming shouted at her suddenly.
Ma Xiaohong was stunned for a moment and then yelled, "Bai Heming, why are you yelling at me?"
The two of them were in the midst of an argument.
Suddenly, a piercing scream from a woman came from next door, agonized and chilling to the bone.
The two of them turned pale with fright.
Recalling some rumors about the neighboring house, they felt a sudden chill and lost any desire to continue their argument, quickly driving away.
Back in the Bai family's courtyard.
As the Bai family and Long Xiaoshan sipped tea in the main hall, they too heard the horrible scream from next door. Bai Xuehen, a little scared, latched onto Long Xiaoshan's arm.
Long Xiaoshan frowned and looked in the direction of the noise, "What's going on?"
Bai Susu said, "It's from Song Yi's house next door, Dad."
Grandpa Bai nodded his head.
"Dad just moved back from the hospital, and I only heard these last couple of days that next door is haunted. A few months ago, someone died there, now only Song Yi refuses to move out. I wanted Dad to stay at my place, but he wouldn't go."
"At my age, having just returned from Purgatory Gate, what ghost should I be afraid of?" Grandpa Bai said with worldly wisdom.
A glint of gold momentarily flickered in Long Xiaoshan's eyes.
Unseen by others.
But he, more than anyone, could see the gloom enveloping the house next door. He knew best whether ghosts existed in this world or not.
The corner of his mouth quirked slightly as he stood up and said, "I'll go take a look next door."
Bai Susu was alarmed and hastily said, "Little Xiaoshan, don't mess around. I've heard that many Taoists invited to the house next door couldn't solve the problem. You better not get involved in this kind of thing."
"Auntie Su, it's okay. Don't you trust me?"
Long Xiaoshan walked outside.
Bai Xuehen called out excitedly: "I'll go with you!"
"You kids, really, you never grow up. There's nothing interesting to see there," said Bai Susu resignedly as she got up. "Dad, should I go with them?"
"Yes, you go. Song Yi is quite pitiful, and she was your classmate back in the day," Grandpa Bai remarked.
The three of them walked out the door.
Seeing a fiery red Ferrari parked at the entrance, Bai Xuehen exclaimed, "Wow, a Ferrari. Whose car is parked at our door?"
In Hechuan City, Ferraris were indeed rare.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
"It's mine," Long Xiaoshan replied offhandedly.
Bai Xuehen laughed, "Big Brother Xiaoshan, you just can't concede defeat with words."
Long Xiaoshan chuckled and, without explaining further, the three of them approached the house next door. Bai Susu knocked on the door and after a long wait, it was opened by a disheveled woman in white, with a pale face and dark circles under her hollow eyes, giving her a cadaverous appearance. Especially at night, the sight was quite eerie.
"It's you, Bai Susu. What do you want?" the woman said, her tone unkind.
"Song Yi, I came to see you. Did something happen to you just now?" Bai Susu inquired.
"I don't need your feigned concern."
Song Yi tried to close the door, but a hand suddenly reached out, holding it open. A voice said, "If you don't want to die, then open the door."
